Where should I set my Z Zero Origin?
Generally, we would recommend when doing toolpaths sensitive to depth you set the material surface as the Z Zero origin. Examples include v-carving designs and dish shaped 3D models.
Note: With materials such as wood, which often have a natural variation in thickness, you should set the tool zero height at the centre of the most important area you will be carving in to minimize distortion.
When doing toolpaths sensitive to the amount of material left, or to easily compensate for variations in thickness as can be seen in many sheet goods, it is typically better to set the Z Zero origin to the machine bed.
This setting is very much dependent on how your CNC and control software work so you may be limited to only working with one of these. If you have questions regarding your machine, you should contact the machine's manufacturer or distributor.
